* 2006 BepiColombo Science Working Team (SWT) Meeting in Padova (2006/9/28)
The 3rd Science Working Team (SWT) Meeting was held from September 26 to 28 in Padova (or Padua), Italy.
Padova has long been famous for its university, founded in 1222. Galileo Galilei was a professor of the university, and served on its faculty, teaching geometry, mechanics, and astronomy until 1610. Scrovegni Chapel is Padova's most eminent attraction, whose inner walls are entirely covered with paintings by Giotto. The spaceprobe "Giotto" from the European Space Agency was named after this medieval Italian painter, who had observed Halley's Comet in 1301 and was inspired to depict it as the star of Bethlehem in his painting.

The meeting was held in a beautiful lecture room, Museo Diocesano, Sala Barbarigo, in the center of Padova. The overall status of BepiColombo project, as well as the progress status of every science instruments, were reported. There were discussions about the expected scientific output by using both MMO and MPO data. At the end of the meeting, the participants considered the way to optimize the operation and data format to have adequate result for the investigation.

BepiColombo, a cooperative mission by Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) / Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (ISAS) and European Space Agency (ESA), will explore Mercury, the planet closest to the Sun. ISAS/JAXA is building one of the main spacecraft, the Mercury Magnetospheric Orbiter (MMO), and ESA will contribute the other, the Mercury Planetary Orbiter (MPO).
